IMPORTANCE OF BEING ACTIVE This picture demonstrates a whole host of benefits of being active. Exercise and just being generally active isn’t prescribed enough by health care professionals anywhere near as much as it should be in my opinion. Listed below are some of the many benefits of keeping active:... * improves your muscular and cardiorespiratory fitness * Improves your posture and balance * improves your bone health * reduces your risk of high blood pressure (hypertension), coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers * helps manage your weight and reduces your risk of becoming obese * reduces anxiety and depression, and helps prevent other mental health problems * boosts your mood and wellbeing The biggest problem I see with people who aren’t perhaps as active is they should be is poor posture and mobility. This can lead to all sorts of problems down the line if they’re not corrected quickly. It doesn’t even need to be too complicated if you’re a beginner and don’t fancy the gym, just a simple exercise/stretching programme and a 30 minute walk everyday is plenty! Ultimately, If you want to feel better and reduce your pain - KEEP ACTIVE.

TIGHT TRAPEZIUS/TRAPS The trapezius, or trap, muscle lives in the top of the shoulder and connects the shoulder blade and thoracic spine to the head. It’s a large, major muscle of the upper back, and it helps stabilise the shoulder blade. COMMON SYMPTOMS... -Stiffness of the neck first thing in the morning -Difficulty retracting your shoulder blades and keeping them in place during exercises such as bench press, squat, deadlift and many more -Shoulder pain during exercise Reduced range of movement -Pain or discomfort whilst sitting at a desk or driving -tension headaches, dizziness/vertigo and temple or jaw pain POTENTIAL CAUSES The main reason I’ve put this post out is because this is something I’ve personally been suffering with during this lockdown period. It’s never normally a huge issue for me, however since my time sitting at a desk has drastically increased since the lockdown started, my right shoulder (the one with the longer term injury) has started to creep forward due to bad posture. This has resulted in my right trap shortening due to being massively over active giving it no time to relax. -Too much time look down at your phone (99.9% of us are very guilty of this) -Poor posture (shoulders too far forward) -Increased stress -Injuries to the trapezius, such as a muscle tear TREATMENT -Self massage -Massage ball use the ball to find tight spots in around your traps and spend a little bit more time on that area. Whether that’s using the ball to perform small circular motions or just applying pressure on the specific area for 10-15 seconds at a time. -Trap targeted stretches -Being more aware of your posture ensuring your shoulders are back and your Traps are relaxed -Or lastly, come and see me! (once this lockdown period has ended) I will postsome videos of how to relieve trap tightness tomorrow, so keep your eyes peeled! Any questions regarding this issue or any others, feel free to pop me a message See more
Routine has alway been a huge thing for me and I know it is for many others. This morning I was thinking of things I could implement in to my current daily routine to keep me that little bit more sane. So I decided to do a 30 day press challenge during April and thought why not get other people involved!... : 1. 100 press ups per day 2. Chest to the floor 3. VIDEO EVIDENCE! (Tag me in your Instagram stories) - I know not everyone will be able to do 100 straight press ups. You can either do a standard press up or a box press up if the standard way is a bit too difficult initially. So you have a few options: 1. Do them all at once 2. Split them in to sets (10, 4, 5 etc) 3. split them up throughout the space of the day. FOR ANYONE THAT FINDS IT TO EASY, ADD AN EXTRA 5 PER DAY. On day 30 you will be doing 250! If you want the table to print out and stick on your wall or save on your phone during April, pop me a message and I'll send it over! I've tagged some people that I think should be participating. No excuses! Tag me in your posts and I'll repost them all See more

PLANTAR FACIITIS Having not been blessed with the best biomechanics it's made me very susceptible to injury, especially during exercise of any form. This week I ran for the first time since December of 2018. During this I remembered one of the many injuries/limitations I've suffered from, especially after a long lay off from running. PLANTAR FACIITIS... PLANTAR FASCIITIS is the pain and inflammation at the point where the thin band of tissues called the plantar fa...scia connects your heel bone to your toes. This tissue helps support the bones of your arch and absorbs some of the strain you put on your feet, whether from running or other kinds of vigorous exercise. SYMPTOMS: - Stabbing pain on the sole of the foot - Pain is worst during first few steps in the morning - Sometimes swelling can be visible - Tenderness on the bottom of the foot/heel CAUSES: - Intensifying or change to normal training routine - New or poor supporting footwear - Tightness in the Achilles tendon or Calf Muscle - Discrepancy in leg length, weight gain or foot pronation TREATMENT: - Massaging sole of the foot with a lacrosse or golf ball - Make sure footwear is suitable and has sufficient arch support. Use orthotics if necessary. - Stretch the plantar fascia - Using ice for up to 20 minutes 3 to 4 times per day - Implement an appropriate rehab programme If you're suffering from Plantar Fasciitis please DM me and I can book you in for a FREE consultation to get you back to your best as quickly as possible Any questions regarding any other injuries feel free to pop me a message. SUNDAY INJURY REHAB! One of my goals this year was to focus on rehabbing my two long term injuries (medial ligament ankle sprain and shoulder impingement). Both injuries really held me back during my training last year so I made it my priority to sort both of them. 6 weeks in to the new year and I’m feeling 100x better. I haven’t been able to run for just over a year now due to my ankle sprain. But finally my ankle is feeling strong enough, so I’m going to give it a w...hirl this week. I’m going to put up a post this week regarding ankle medial ligament sprains as the rehab process for mine has been a nightmare! It’s so hard to find information regarding this particular sprain due to how uncommon they are, so it may be useful to someone. I’m going to start offering gym based injury rehab sessions at underground gym in Newhaven (@undergroundgyms). If this is something you’re interested in or you have any questions on a current injury feel free to pop me a message.
