It seems crazy to have to repeat WASH YOUR HANDS! (Ever since gross anatomy labs and the ever-present smell of phenol, I have been a compulsive hand washer anyway). But the little dab of hand sanitizers (some containing benzalkonium chloride or triclosan) often is not enough to cover the whole hand and gives a false confidence that all virus and other microbes are instantly destroyed. Methanol has been found in some hand sanitizers, and can be absorbed through the skin, wi...th at least 7 people in New Mexico severely injured from DRINKING hand sanitizer for the high alcohol content, and 3 fatally. Sanitizing wipes have even more potential problems, and if you look on the containers, they will say something like "Wash hands after use." They may contain sodium hypochlorite or alkyl dimethyl ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, and other hard-to-pronounce chemicals. So as always, WASH YOUR HANDS! With soap and water, for 20-30 seconds at least. See more

As a doctor for over 25 years I am hopefully smart enough not to over-react to media and even scientific journal reports. And my patients mostly know my personal stand and opinions on controversial issues of healthcare. But regardless, it is best to be open-minded and listen to all sides of a debate before closing our own mind and setting it in stone. This is not a time to be dogmatic but it is a time to reflect, listen and pray before opening our mouths to speak.

We are all probably experiencing some phase of this. I certainly agree with the advice in this of power naps...but those who know me won't be surprised at all.

While Oregon is still staying at home, we at ACC are hoping you are protecting your families from the effects of SARS-CoV2. And that isn’t just social distancing. Social isolation and dwelling on negative outcomes beyond your control are deadly too. Make a point to reach out by phone or webcam (not just social media!) to family and friends who may be afraid or are struggling right now. See how that will boost your morale. And commit to do something positive for yourself: ...1. Start some fun exercising (Disney sing-alongs are my go to right now!) and let it go. 2. Laugh at yourself and be a little silly - it’s ok, really. Nobody’s watching (turn off Alexa) 3. Eat your veggies! 4. If you are hurting, come in to get chiro treatment - we are lonely too! We are practicing as safely as we can and value your health and our own. For any questions or concerns, call us! Dr. V

Definitely good words to remember during this time. Luke 12:25 and Phil 4:6

As a "more than average" tech-savvy business and end-user, I am extremely cautious of new tools that are for "convenience". Most "free" apps and resources are not truly open-source, but use ads or mining of data (personal and technical) to pay for the services. Our office is EXTREMELY careful with your protected healthcare information (PHI) and have professional safeguards built in to our systems to avoid the plethora of phishing, zero-day exploits, hacks and ransom-ware that have exploded since the recent COVID-19 shutdown. The following article and group page is a good resource. Tele-health needs to have end-end encryption, and be HIPAA-compliant, even in a relaxed enforcement mode like now. So Zoom is out, as well as many social media platforms. Just be cautious, as safe-distancing should not give rise to unsafe online activity.

Just an update about cleaning products. Soap and water for hands, and some tips for surfaces. Hydrogen peroxide may be the best but be careful on fabrics (like your clothes!). Beware fad or internet recipes. There is a reason chemists make a living formulating hand sanitizers that work and are safe.

Here is a handy self-assessment Legacy provides (my personal doctor is at Legacy Firwood) to help decide if you need to see a doctor. Assessing the personal risk is what many of our patients are asking for. https://legacy-c19.smartexam.com/patient/covidregister/

Now THIS is social distancing

Be careful of bad advice even from doctors. Just because it is on the internet....
