Studies on depression and the sense of smell show that clinical depression is associated with reduced olfactory sensitivity (Negoias et al 2010, Schablitzky and... Pause 2014). However, this may not apply to SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder aka Seasonal Depression), where researchers find the opposite an increased olfactory sensitivity, especially in the right nostril, which corresponds to the right side of the brain (Postolache et al 1999). This increased sensitivity suggests that people with SAD may be especially responsive to aromatherapy. In a 2013 article, researchers at Xiamen University, China, commented: Most studies, as well as clinically applied experience, have indicated that various essential oils, such as lavender, lemon and bergamot can help to relieve stress, anxiety, depression and other mood disorders. Most notably, inhalation of essential oils can communicate signals to the olfactory system and stimulate the brain to exert neurotransmitters (e.g. serotonin and dopamine) thereby further regulating mood. https://roberttisserand.com//essential-oils-and-seasonal-/

The Integrated Healthcare Collaborative (IHC) has written to Health Ministers across the UK, calling on them to designate complementary, traditional and natural... therapists and practitioners as essential healthcare workers, so that they can continue to support patient health and wellbeing during tier 3 lockdowns and above. Following the easing of government restrictions imposed during the first national lockdown, the complementary, traditional and natural healthcare industry has been working hard to support patients across the UK with a range of health and wellbeing issues. However, with an increasing number of tier 3 lockdowns, and now national lockdowns, in order to suppress the spread of Covid 19, it appears likely that these very high alert levels will continue for some time to come. It is often during these times of lockdown that patients look for support from this sector. However, under previous government local lockdown regulations, many have not been able to do so. The result is that patients cannot access a range of services which could support their physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing. For these patients, these are essential services. The industry has worked hard to ensure that therapists and practitioners are working in Covid 19 safe environments, and that they are using government Test and Trace protocols as required. As such, the risk of this industry increasing the incidence of Covid 19 is minimal, yet the benefits to public health and wellbeing could be considerable. The complementary, traditional and natural healthcare industry is professionally run, and professional associations within the IHC have strict codes or conduct and work to the very highest standards of practice. We contribute to the physical and mental health and wellbeing of millions of people across the UK. IHC believes that the UK Government and devolved administrations must now designate healthcare professionals in this sector as essential workers. This would mean that they can be assured of working during all lockdowns, including tier 3 lockdowns and above, so that they can provide Covid 19 safe services to patients, and additional capacity to support our NHS partners.

THE VAGUS NERVE A seemingly never-ending branching nerve that connects most of our major organs to our brain . It’s the longest cranial nerve in our body,... one for the right side and one for the left. And is largely responsible for the #mindbody connection for its role as a mediator between thinking and feeling, you know our gut feeling. The vagus nerve is the queen of the parasympathetic nervous system. The rest and digest or the #chillout nerve. So the more we do things to activate the #vagus nerve (like deep #breathing), the most we combat the effects of its opposer, the sympathetic nervous system - the fight or flight, rushing around, have to do something, #stress releasing one. A few other functions of the vagus nerve, just to name a few: slows your heart rate and respiration. lowers blood pressure. helps with calmness and relaxation. controls involuntary muscles in the digestive system, therefore, aiding digestion. taste sensation. movement function for the muscles in the neck responsible for swallowing and speech. gut-brain communication. reduces inflammation. BIOTENSEGRITY [FASCIA ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY] What a cool example of biotensegrity and how fascia works in our body. Thanks to @cat_shanti for this amazing... video! The old way to explain fascia: Thin layer around a muscle, the white we see on a piece of meat. Goes in line with the old idea of a divided body, where fascia is what separates different parts and layers from each other. The updated explanation of fascia: Fascia is ONE system, without beginning and end that maintains interconnection, communication and interaction between different parts of the body. Our body, everything in our body, consists of cells and the substance outside our cells, the extracellular matrix (ECM). A tissue is a group of cells with similar tasks (muscle tissue, bone tissue) and they are all encapsulated by the ECM. (Robert Schleip, Fascial Manipulation, Langevin) The fascial system is unique and continuous, it is responsible for the communication and interaction of all body parts. In other words, a stimulus in a given location of the body will have influence throughout the whole body system. Shoulder pain for example can be a response to a stimulus not necessarily generated in the shoulder, since everything is connected. Due to biotensegrity, forces are distributed, spaces are maintained and changes in tension in one place have repercussions throughout the whole body. The fascial tissue that surrounds us from head to toe, creating and distributing tensions, is responsible for maintaining our structure in a stable way through the game of tension and compression. The word tensegrity is coming from tension and integrity. When we apply this concept to human beings, the correct term is biotensegrity. Whenever we want to treat a body region, we must pay attention to all these internal connections so that the goal and the perfect outcome could be achieved. #Physiotherapy #SportsPhysiotherapy #Osteopathy #Therapy #Biotensegrity #Tensegrity #Biomechanics #PhysicalTherapy #Rehab #Medicine #Sportsmedicine #Sportstherapy #Massage #Healing #Rolfing #Blackroll #Fascia #Fitness #Training #Yoga #Pilates #Yogis #Yogaflow #Yogalove #Acrobatics #Yogaholic #Calisthenics #Yogapractic See more

DO YOU STRENGTH TRAIN? After the age of 30, we lose about 10% of our muscle mass each decade until about 50, when that loss increases to 15% per decade. This ha...s critical implications for your health. Your lean muscle mass is one of the best predictors for how well you will be as you age. We all benefit from doing regular strength training but, please remember, this does not need to be in the gym with weights....although it can be if you want! Practical is better than optimal. Many of us set our goals far too high and end up doing nothing. In Feel Better in 5, there is a brilliant 5 minute bodyweight workout called the Power 5 - that I do every day whilst my coffee brews. To do it, you don’t need to join a gym or buy any equipment. #FBI5 is now available in the US What kind of strength training do you do? Have you tried The Classic 5 workout yet? WHO HAS A SNAPPING HIP? Internal Snapping Hip Syndrome is a condition that is characterized by an audible click, pop or snap sensation in the front of the hip... with certain movements. The snapping sound is produced as a result of the iliopsoas tendon (Hip flexor) flicking over a bony prominence in the pelvis (called the iliopectineal eminence). It generally occurs as the hip extends (+/- externally rotates +/- abducts) from a flexed position. There is usually no pain associated, however, can potentially develop into an issue if left unaddressed. Check out the NEW blog post for more information and the exercises I recommend for it. https://posturedirect.com/snapping-hip-syndrome-exercises/ Enjoy!
